SYMPTOM · GARAGE DOOR REMOTE OR KEYPAD NOT WORKING
THE REMOTE QUIT.
You click the remote and nothing happens. Maybe the keypad is dead too, or maybe the wall button still works. Where it fails tells you most of what you need to know.

WHY IT STOPS LISTENING.
Start with the wall button. If the wall button opens the door but the remote and keypad don't, the opener and the door are fine and the problem is wireless: batteries, pairing, the receiver, or the antenna. If nothing works, wall button included, the problem is power, the opener, or the door itself.
Remote batteries are the most common cause by far. After that, remotes lose their pairing, especially after a power outage or a repair to the opener's logic board. Re-pairing is usually a matter of pressing the learn button on the opener head and then the remote button within a short window.
Many wall consoles have a lock or vacation button that blocks every remote and keypad. It gets pressed by accident more often than you'd think, and the fix is pressing it again.
The antenna wire hanging from the opener head picks up the remote's signal. If it has been tucked up, painted over, or damaged, range drops to almost nothing. On some openers, certain LED bulbs in the opener light can interfere with the signal too.
If none of that does it, the receiver or logic board may have failed, or an older opener may not pair with a newer remote. We program remotes and keypads for most major brands across Mocksville, Davie County, and the western Triad. Call (336) 745-8173 and we'll help you sort it out.
CHECK THIS FIRST.
- Try the wall button. If it works, the door and opener are fine.
- Replace the remote battery, then try again close to the door.
- Look for a lock or vacation light on the wall console and turn it off.
- Make sure the opener has power: light on, plugged in, breaker on.
- Check that the antenna wire on the opener head hangs straight down and isn't damaged.
If the door won't move from any button and the opener hums or strains, stop pressing. That's often a broken spring, and the motor can strip its gear trying.
REMOTE, KEYPAD, OR OPENER?
Remote dead, wall button works
Batteries, pairing, or the lock button. All fixable in minutes, usually without a service call.
Keypad dead, remote works
Keypads run on their own batteries, and some lose their code after a battery change. Replace the battery and re-enter the PIN, or re-pair the keypad with the learn button.
Works only up close
A weak remote battery, a damaged or tucked antenna, or interference from the opener's light bulbs. Swapping the bulb type is an easy test.
Nothing works, wall button included
Check power first. If the opener has power and still won't respond, it's the opener or the door. If the motor runs but the door doesn't move, see opener runs but the door won't move, or get garage door opener repair.
STRAIGHT ANSWERS.
REVIEWED OCTOBER 2026
Why did my garage door remote stop working?
Usually a dead battery. After that, the remote lost its pairing, the lock button on the wall console is on, or the antenna wire on the opener is damaged or tucked away.
How do I reprogram my garage door remote?
On most openers, press and release the learn button on the motor head, then press the remote button you want to use within about 30 seconds. The opener light blinks or clicks to confirm. Your opener's manual has the exact steps.
Can you program a new remote or keypad for my opener?
Yes. We program remotes and keypads for most major brands, and we'll tell you if your opener is old enough that a new remote won't pair with it.
When should I replace the opener instead?
If the logic board has failed more than once, the opener has no safety sensors, or it's too old to work with current remotes, replacement usually makes more sense. We install LiftMaster openers, with phone control and battery backup available.
