You hit the button, the motor does its thing, and the door sits there like it never got the memo.

WHY THE MOTOR SPINS ALONE.
The most common cause is the simplest. Every opener has an emergency release cord, and once it's pulled, the motor runs without moving anything. It gets pulled during power outages, snagged by car antennas, and forgotten.
If the motor runs and you hear grinding, the drive gear inside the opener has likely stripped. It's a plastic part doing a metal job, and it wears out.
If the opener strains without grinding, check the springs. An opener that can't move the door is often being asked to lift what a broken spring dropped on it.
CHECK THIS FIRST.
- Look for the red release cord hanging from the opener rail. Pull it toward the door to re-engage, then try again.
- Listen for grinding from the motor head. Grinding means the gear, not the door.
- Glance at the springs above the door for a visible gap in the coil.
Re-engaging the trolley is safe to do yourself. Anything involving springs or cables is not, and that's the part we do.

Why does my opener run but the door doesn't move?
Three usual suspects. The emergency release cord got pulled and the trolley is disconnected. The opener stripped its drive gear, which sounds like running with a grind. Or a spring broke and the opener can't budge the extra weight.
How do I open my garage door in a power outage?
With the door fully closed, pull the red release cord straight down, then lift the door by hand. It should rise smoothly and feel light. If it feels heavy, stop: that's a spring problem, not an outage problem, and the door can fall.
How do I reconnect the opener after pulling the release cord?
Close the door all the way, then run the opener. On most models the trolley clicks itself back onto the carriage on the first pass. If yours doesn't, pull the cord toward the door to reset the latch and run it once more.
